Big Horn 100 Mile Training and Preparation: Part I

After running and completing the Grand Slam of Ultra Running in 2014 I needed a break from training and racing. In short I was burnt out and really didn’t have that drive or desire to dedicate myself to another race effort. Personally, the enjoyment I get out of running and racing is the preparation, training and if all goes well, the execution of a successful race. This is one of the reasons I don’t race as much as many other ultra and trail runners and don’t like to jump into a race just to do it.

Winter Running Advice:

Interesting quick read on winter running. Living in Minnesota the need to log winter miles is a necessity if you plan on doing any spring racing. I really have not had any major issues with temperatures being a limiting factor. Mostly the issue for me is finding areas with secure footing when I want to run at a faster pace. Thankfully Minneapolis and St. Paul do a phenomenal job at clearing and salting the biking/running paths around the city so most runs are not an issue. However, when trying to find stretches of pavement to do speed or tempo runs on and not have to worry about slipping on ice or simply too much snow to allow for a decent pace there is not always a good option

How to Heat Train and It’s Potential Benefits:

I’ve had a few people ask me about using saunas for heat training. I’ve always been pretty good at running in the heat and last year running a Lean Horse 100 miler I did a lot of specific heat training for that event with a lot of success. I ran a 100 Mile PR of 15:59:57. Well that’s enough bragging. Lean Horse is a flat and fast course known for fast times and for its dry and high temps.
